Why fees weigh so much over time

Annual management fees are charged on the whole capital, year after year, not just on the gains. Each euro charged also stops earning interest: the gap widens over time, like compound interest, but against you. Over a long period, a fee difference that looks small can amount to a large share of the final capital.

Management fees and contribution fees

Contribution fees, also called entry fees, are charged once on each amount paid in, before it is invested. Management fees are charged continuously on the invested amount, whatever the result. Over a long horizon they usually weigh more, because they apply every year to a growing capital.

How to use this calculator

Enter the same return for both investments, then the fees stated in each one's documents: key information document, general terms or price list. The calculator shows each investment's final capital, the difference between them, and what the fees cost compared with a fee-free investment. The default values are only an example.

Frequently asked questions

Are management fees charged even if the investment loses money?
Yes. They are calculated on the invested amount, not on the gains: they are charged whether the investment goes up or down.
Why is the cost of fees higher than the fees charged?
Because a euro charged no longer earns interest. The cost shown compares each investment with a fee-free one: it counts the fees charged and the interest they would have earned until the end of the period.
Where can I find an investment's fees?
In its documents: the key information document (KID) of a fund or ETF, the general terms and fee schedule of a life insurance or PER contract, or a broker's price list.
Does the calculator take tax into account?
No: it isolates the effect of fees. Tax and social charges depend on the account type and your situation; the PEA, life insurance and CTO calculators include them.
How are fees charged in the calculation?
Contribution fees are deducted from each payment before it is invested. Annual management fees are charged every month, pro rata to the invested amount. Monthly contributions are made at the end of the month.

How it is calculated

This calculator applies no tax or social security scale: the result depends only on the assumptions used (amounts, rates, durations).
