What is the activity bonus (prime d'activite)?

The activity bonus is a monthly social benefit paid by the CAF to low-income workers in France. It was created in 2016 by merging the RSA activite and the employment bonus. It supplements earned income to encourage and reward professional activity.

Base Amount

A fixed base amount adjusted by household size (single, couple, number of children). This forms the foundation of the calculation.

Individual Bonus

An additional bonus for each working member of the household whose income exceeds a minimum threshold, encouraging both partners to work.

Housing Deduction

A flat-rate housing deduction is applied if you receive housing benefits (APL, ALS, ALF) or own your home without a mortgage.

Eligibility conditions

You must be over 18, reside in France, and have professional income. Students and apprentices qualify only if their monthly income exceeds approximately €1,070. The bonus is means-tested: household resources must not exceed a ceiling that varies by family composition.

How the amount is calculated

The formula is: Activity bonus = (base amount + individual bonus + children bonus) - (household resources + housing deduction). The result is paid monthly and recalculated quarterly based on declared income.

Frequently asked questions

What is the income ceiling for the activity bonus?
There is no single ceiling: it depends on your household composition. As a rough guide, a single person without children earning above approximately €1,800 net per month is typically no longer eligible.
Can I receive the activity bonus and housing benefits together?
Yes, but receiving housing benefits triggers a flat-rate housing deduction that reduces your activity bonus amount. The two benefits remain compatible.
How often is the activity bonus paid?
It is paid monthly by the CAF. Every three months, you must declare your household income for the past quarter so the amount can be recalculated.
Are self-employed workers eligible?
Yes, self-employed workers (micro-entrepreneurs, freelancers) can receive the activity bonus. Their professional income is assessed after applying the relevant flat-rate allowance for their activity type.
